BACKGROUND:
Social Media Platforms serve as interactive technologies that facilitate creating and sharing information, ideas, and interests. However, they also have the potential to spread violence, racism, and hate, leading to real-life consequences. Meta, formerly Facebook, and other major platforms like Instagram and TikTok, have adopted community standards and guidelines to regulate such content. Despite these standards and guidelines, problematic content continues to persist on these platforms, posing risks to public safety.
DISCUSSION:
This resolution calls out Social Media Platforms' responsibility to regulate and eliminate content that promotes violence, hate, and racism. By adopting this resolution, the Board of Supervisors underscores the importance of Social Media Platforms enforcing their community standards and guidelines to prevent the spread of harmful content. It urges Social Media Platforms to take swift and transparent action in addressing flagged content and partnering with local governing entities and law enforcement to prevent violence.
