BACKGROUND:
EPP teaches the Enneagram system including all nine personality styles. EPP teaches incarcerated persons to identify, observe, and self-regulate their behavioral and emotional patterns. Building self-awareness through learning the Enneagram system helps prepare individuals for reintegration into the community.

DISCUSSION:
In the Fall of 2024, the Sheriff's Office facilitated a Request for Proposals (RFP) process for jail programming and selected EPP as one program provider. EPP's curriculum is informed by the principles of cognitive behavioral intervention (CBI) that help offenders identify triggers, understand the impact of triggers, and support changes in behavior. Since 2015, EPP has taught the justice-involved population in the correctional facilities. San Mateo County joins other county jails and state prisons in offering the program, which consists of 24 hours of classroom time. Between classes, students engage in homework assignments and retain the textbook and workbook at the conclusion of the course. In FY 2024-25, EPP offered its program in Spanish for the first time and will include Spanish sessions in the next contract period.
