BACKGROUND:
Loneliness is the subjective feeling of being socially isolated, disconnected, or lacking meaningful relationships. In January 2024, the County of San Mateo formally declared loneliness a public health emergency in response to growing concerns about its widespread impact.
Research has shown that the health consequences of chronic social isolation are significant, with studies equating its risks to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Employees across various industries report feeling disconnected from their colleagues and workplace environments. A 2023 survey by the American Psychological Association revealed that nearly one in three workers feel isolated at work, a condition linked to decreased job satisfaction, lower productivity, and higher employee turnover. In a region like San Mateo County, known for innovation and economic vitality, ensuring employee well-being is vital to sustaining a thriving, resilient workforce.
DISCUSSION:
This Resolution encourages private employers throughout San Mateo County to proactively address workplace loneliness through inclusive, compassionate strategies. These may include fostering in-person interactions, supporting mental health resources, organizing team-building activities, and creating equitable work cultures that promote connection and belonging.
By adopting this Resolution, the County affirms its commitment to holistic public health and calls on the business community to join in building a more connected, supportive environment for all workers....
