BACKGROUND:
In 2020-21, the Sheriff's Office transitioned from the Smith & Wesson M&P pistol to the Sig Sauer P320 red dot platform as the standard issued duty firearm for all sworn staff members, as the M&P pistol had reached the end of its service life. Red dot equipped pistols were emerging as a law enforcement standard.
Nationwide reports emerged concerning the Sig Sauer P320's safety and patterns of unintentional discharging while holstered. Despite initial assurances from the manufacturer that the weapon was safe and up to date with all recommended safety upgrades, numerous documented incidents and lawsuits across the country have proven otherwise. On August 30, 2024, an FBI investigative report was released confirming the P320's potential to discharge without trigger manipulation while holstered.
Although the Sheriff's Office has not experienced any discharges locally, the consistency and seriousness of external, nationwide incidents warrant immediate action. Agencies at both federal and local levels have taken and continue to take decisive steps to discontinue or ban the Sig Sauer P320 pistol.
DISCUSSION:
The Sheriff's Office recommends the immediate emergency procurement of 425 Glock Model 45 Gen5 9mm handguns and compatible holsters to replace the current inventory of Sig Sauer P320s.
