BACKGROUND:
Today, digital access and literacy are vital for accessing information, services, and maintaining connections. Nationally, 22% of adults aged 65 and older do not use the internet, highlighting significant barriers that prevent many older adults from benefiting from digital resources. In San Mateo County, the older adult population is growing, and many individuals face challenges that can lead to social isolation and difficulties in accessing essential services like healthcare and financial management.

San Mateo County is committed to promoting digital inclusion and equity through various initiatives. The county has distributed over 200 devices to seniors, supported internet access via local libraries, and offered digital literacy training in collaboration with community organizations. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the necessity of digital connectivity for all residents, especially older adults who increasingly rely on online services for telehealth, remote communication, and accessing crucial information.

The county is actively working with local and national organizations to align investments in digital infrastructure with broader strategies for digital inclusion. It is essential for the well-being of older adults in San Mateo County to advance their digital access and ensure their integration into the digital community.
