BACKGROUND:
In April 2021, San Mateo Medical Center (SMMC) completed a Request for Proposals for medical waste disposal services. On December 14, 2021, SMMC and Clean Harbors Environmental Services, Inc. (Clean Harbors) entered into an agreement to provide medical waste disposal services for the term of January 1, 2022 through December 31, 2022, in an amount not to exceed $200,000. There have been several amendments extending the term of the agreement through February 28, 2025, and increasing the amount authorized to be expended to $625,000 with services covering SMMC, Correctional Health Services (CHS), Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (BHRS), and Public Health, Policy and Planning (PHPP).

DISCUSSION:
There is an ongoing need for medical waste disposal services at these County Health divisions. SMMC is requesting that the Board authorize an amendment to the agreement, as contemplated in the original RFP, to extend the term of the agreement by an additional 22 months through December 31, 2026, and increasing the corresponding amount of the agreement by $442,000, to an amount not to exceed $1,067,000. This amendment is coming to this Board late due to prolonged negotiations with the vendor.
