body
BACKGROUND:
Suicide is a leading cause of death among men and boys, who account for nearly 80% of all suicides, with young men particularly at risk. Governor Newsom’s Executive Order N-31-25 acknowledges this crisis and directs state agencies to take targeted action to improve mental health outcomes for men and boys through expanded behavioral health services, education, and workforce initiatives. San Mateo County recognizes this as a local issue, with men and boys often facing stigma, isolation, and untreated mental health conditions that require community-based, proactive support.

DISCUSSION:
This resolution supports Executive Order N-31-25 and affirms the County’s commitment to reducing suicide among men and boys by encouraging early intervention, culturally responsive outreach, and inclusive access to mental health services. It promotes collaboration across County departments, schools, and community partners to strengthen prevention efforts without imposing mandates. By recognizing suicide as a public health crisis, the County aims to reduce stigma, build connections, and improve well-being for all residents, particularly those most at risk.

FISCAL IMPACT:
None.
