BACKGROUND:
The Employee of the Month program was established in December 1984 to recognize and honor County employees who consistently demonstrate an outstanding level of performance.

Our Employee of the Month for August 2025 is Sandra Firpo a Department of Emergency Management Coordinator in the Department of Emergency Management.

DISCUSSION:
Sandra joined the County in 2024. Over the past year, she has led 19 community events and dozens of trainings, engaging more than 3,000 residents - many that are monolingual or with Access and Functional Needs. Sandra delivers bilingual outreach across the County, reaching thousands with critical preparedness messaging. Her bilingual workshops and hands-on materials empower families to plan, build kits, and understand local risks. Sandra has strengthened partnerships with cities, community based organizations (CBOs), and voluntary organizations active in disaster (VOADs), making preparedness more community-led and trusted. Growing engagement is reflected with the nearly 5,000 new sign-ups to the SMC Alert since July 2024. Her care and consistency have boosted attendance, improved language access, and built trust with communities often left out of traditional outreach-making her an essential force in our emergency management efforts.

Sandra recently led our Be Wildfire Ready and Safe event, drawing over 400 participants and leaving a lasting impact. She played a key role in the success of last year's Disaster Preparedness Day, which welcomed over 1,800 attendees with workshops in English, Spanish, and Mandarin.
