Subject: FY 2022-2023 Oil Spill and Prevention Response Grant Program
RECOMMENDATION:
title
Adopt a resolution authorizing the Director of the Department of Emergency Management to enter into an agreement with the Department of Fish and Wildlife for the Oil Spill Contingency Plan Grant program for $10,000 and a term from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023
body
BACKGROUND:
On a yearly basis, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife awards the County Operational Area grant funding to update their local Oil Spill Contingency Plan, identify gaps, attend area committee meetings, and participate in a statewide oil spill drill.
DISCUSSION:
The Cosco Busan Oil Spill that occurred in 2007 raised awareness throughout many San Mateo County agencies about protecting the public and local resources in the event of an oil spill. It also led to changes in how we prepared for such incidents that could occur on the Bayside Coast of the County.
This grant allows the Department of Emergency Management to update and expand the County’s Oil Spill Contingency Plan, participate in the statewide oil spill drill, and become more familiar with managing an oil spill event should it happen in San Mateo County.
The resolution has been reviewed and approved as to form by County Counsel.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The FY 2022-2023 Oil Spill Contingency Plan Grant program funding in the amount of $10,000 with a term of July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023, will be included in the Department of Emergency Management’s FY 2022-2023 budget. There is no Net County Cost.
