BACKGROUND:
In January 2017, the County of San Mateo formed the Project Development Unit (PDU) to manage all new construction projects, including the replacement of Fire Station 59. This station is a vital regional asset, serving the South Coast and acting as a strategic base for wildfire response.

The current station, located in a floodplain, suffers from yearly flooding, mold, and plumbing system failures, impacting access and service to the Pescadero community. Seasonal flooding isolates the station, delaying emergency response and compromising safety. Moreover, the existing facility lacks adequate space for staffing and equipment, hindering CalFire's ability to meet community needs, especially during peak fire seasons. To address these critical issues, the County Board of Supervisors approved the construction of a new fire station on a 1.75-acre site at 350-360 Butano Cut Off.

DISCUSSION:
