BACKGROUND:

Teen dating violence affects one in three youth in the U.S., often leading to long-term mental, emotional, and physical harm. Nearly half of incidents occur on school grounds, impacting students’ safety, academic performance, and well-being. Most teens in abusive relationships never seek help due to fear, stigma, or lack of awareness.

Parents, caregivers, and educators often underestimate the prevalence and seriousness of this issue. However, age-appropriate education around healthy relationships, consent, and communication has proven effective in preventing abuse and shifting social norms.

DISCUSSION:

This Resolution affirms the County’s commitment to addressing teen dating violence through education, community collaboration, and culturally responsive resources.

It supports the voluntary integration of prevention programs in schools and encourages partnerships with mental health professionals and survivor advocates. It also calls on families and community leaders to engage young people in open conversations about respect and safety.

By adopting this Resolution, the County reinforces that preventing teen dating violence is a shared responsibility that begins with education, awareness, and compassion.

FISCAL IMPACT:

None.
