Recommendation for the appointment of Andrea Jones to the San Mateo County Arts Commission, representing District 3, for an initial partial term ending December 31, 2026.

BACKGROUND:

The Arts Commission was created to promote and encourage the arts, to serve in an advisory capacity to the Board of Supervisors, to prepare and update the County’s strategic and cultural plan, and act as a liaison with arts organizations in order to ensure collaboration and coordination related to culture and art activities in San Mateo County.

 

DISCUSSION:

Andrea Jones is being recommended to represent District 3 on the Arts Commission for an initial partial term ending December 31, 2026, coinciding with District 3 Supervisor’s term in office. The seat was formerly held by Belinda Hernandez-Arriaga and then briefly by Veronica Rodriguez who resigned prior to serving.

 

Andrea Jones is a resident of Emerald Hills whose career and service reflect her love of San Mateo County and the arts. She pursued an art education degree, spending ten years teaching creative writing and photography to youth in juvenile hall and school settings. She led STEM education and programming for youth through Mouse California, served as Executive Director of The Big Lift through the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, and most recently was the Director of Bay Area Giving for the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. In this role, she built out the Community Space with a primary focus on community-driven arts exhibits in partnership with the Redwood City Parks and Arts Foundation. Her volunteer activities include working with the Redwood City Education Foundation, Second Harvest Food Bank, and the Roy Cloud Parent-Teacher Organization. She brings a passion for the arts, executive and philanthropic experience, a record of community service and partnership, and a vision to make San Mateo County a beautiful place for all.
