BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION:

The County has conducted an extensive recruitment for the position of Director of Human Services Agency.  Claire Cunningham has been appointed by the County Executive as the best candidate for this position based on her extensive experience and executive leadership abilities.

 

Ms. Cunningham started with the County in 2007. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated a creative and strategic approach to problem-solving, effective communication, and a responsive and collaborative approach.  She currently serves as the Interim Assistant Director of Human Services Agency where she’s taken a hands-on approach and demonstrated success in advancing County Board priorities in the areas of housing, equity, children and families, and emergency preparedness.  Prior to joining the Human Services Agency in early 2023, she served as Chief Deputy County Attorney primarily advising the County Board of Education, County Superintendent of Schools, numerous school districts, and, for over a decade, the Human Services Agency. 

 

Ms. Cunningham holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Smith College and a law degree from the University of California, College of the Law, San Francisco. Ms. Cunningham’s knowledge, leadership abilities, collaborative approach, experience building high performing teams, and her commitment to service will be beneficial to the County and community.  

 

The Charter requires the Board of Supervisors to confirm appointments of department heads nominated by the County Executive.  Ms. Cunningham will start her new role on July 24, 2023.

The compensation and benefits for this position are set forth in the County’s Resolution establishing the salary and benefits for the unrepresented Management Employees of the County and the Master Salary Resolution approved by this Board.
