Recommendation for the appointment of Foster City Police Chief Corey Call to the San Mateo County Domestic Violence Council, representing Police Chiefs and Sheriff Association, for an initial full term ending December 31, 2028.

BACKGROUND:

The San Mateo County Domestic Violence Council is responsible for establishing policies to reduce and prevent domestic violence and enhance victim’s services.

 

Members of the Domestic Violence Council evaluate, make recommendations and initiate activities regarding: current response of law enforcement, the judicial system, health care services and community resources; local government efforts to reduce domestic and family violence; public awareness and public education necessary to state and local laws; and the need for services for those who are victims of domestic and family violence.  The Council develops an annual work plan and submits an annual report to the Board of Supervisors.

 

On October 18, 2022, Resolution No. 079237 increased membership of the Council to 24 with the addition of a second non-profit representative providing legal services to battered women. Categorical Members are those who serve by virtue of their public or other specifically designated office and their terms shall be until their public office term ends. Appointed Members shall comprise all remaining members. Appointed Members shall be appointed by the Board, and shall serve a term of four years.

 

DISCUSSION:

At the recommendation of the San Mateo County Police Chiefs and Sheriff Association, Foster City Police Chief Corey Call is being recommended for appointment to represent the association’s appointed seat. This seat was formerly held by Colma Police Chief John Munsey. The 4-year term for the seat expired December 31, 2024. Upon approval, this appointment will reflect a new 4-year term through December 31, 2028.

 

Chief Corey Call has been appointed by the City of Foster City as the Chief of Foster City Police Department, following his predecessor Tracy Avelar. Chief Call has been with the Foster City Police Department since 2001. He ascended through the ranks to most recently being named Captain of the Patrol Division in 2019. Chief Call earned his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice Management from Union Institute and University and a master’s degree in Law Enforcement and Public Safety Leadership from the University of San Diego. He is also a graduate of the Sherman Block Leadership Institute (SLI), the LAPD Leadership Academy, and POST Command College.
