BACKGROUND:
Recent statements by U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, have highlighted the pressing need to address mental health concerns linked to social media use, particularly among adolescents. Dr. Murthy has recommended implementing warning labels on social media platforms, akin to those required on cigarette packages, to increase awareness and mitigate potential negative impacts on mental health.
Data underscores the scale of this issue: nearly 95% of individuals aged 13 to 17 are active on social media, with over a third engaging “almost constantly.” This pervasive use raises significant concerns about its impact on mental health. Studies on tobacco use have demonstrated that warning labels can effectively raise awareness and influence behavior regarding health risks, providing a precedent for their potential efficacy in the realm of social media. The County of San Mateo is dedicated to safeguarding the health and well-being of its residents, particularly the youth. As such, it is crucial to consider proactive measures to address the mental health risks posed by social media use.
