BACKGROUND:
The Department of Public Works completed the Ticonderoga Drive Slide Repair Project in 1985, which included construction of a retaining wall on a portion of Ticonderoga Drive in the San Mateo Highlands area. This retaining wall was built to stabilize the slope and protect Ticonderoga Drive following a significant landslide event.
DISCUSSION:
The retaining wall was constructed 40 years ago, the structure is nearing the end of its useful life, and is showing signs of significant deterioration. Given the age and condition of the retaining wall, improvements are necessary to ensure the continued stability of both the wall and the adjacent roadway.
The Ticonderoga Drive Retaining Wall Improvement Project (Project) includes constructing new piles behind the existing 210 foot long retaining wall for additional support and stabilization. The Project will include replacing the timber laggings in the existing wall with concrete laggings. The Project requires work below the existing sidewalks, curbs, and gutters and roadway along the length of the wall. The sidewalks, curbs, and gutters will be replaced and the road paved within the Project limits.
The County Attorney has reviewed and approved the resolution as to form.
EQUITY IMPACT:
The Project ensures roadway stability, public safety, and accessibility by reinforcing the existing structure, replacing sidewalks and gutters, and resurfacing the road. The Project advances more reliable infrastructure and minimizes impacts to residents who experience limited mobility or economic resources who may disproportionately bear the burden of infrastructure degradation.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The estimated construction cost of the Project is $1,600,000. The Project is proposed to be financed through the Senate Bill 1 Road Maintenance and Rehabilitation Account.
There is no impact to the General Fund.
