BACKGROUND:

For the efficient and effective statutory compliance of the review of juvenile operations in this county, the Court and the Board have agreed that the appointees by the Court to the Juvenile Justice Commission are appointed concurrently by the Board of Supervisors to the Juvenile Justice & Delinquency Prevention Commission.

DISCUSSION:

With the recommendation of the Juvenile Judge Susan Irene Etezadi, Presiding Judge Leland Davis III recommends the appointment of Ameya Nori, Wesley Liu, and reappointment of Sathvik Nori to the Juvenile Justice & Delinquency Prevention Commission for the term prescribed by law. Ameya Nori is being recommended for an initial partial term ending December 31, 2025. Wesley Liu is being recommended for appointment to a seat formerly held by Steven Duddy, for an existing partial term ending December 31, 2025. Sathvik Nori began serving a partial term in April 2020. His current term incorrectly expires June 30, 2022 due to administrative error, but should have held a December expiration date to coincide with the December 31st ending of members’ terms. Approval of this memorandum shall reflect the correct 4-year term as January 1, 2022 through December 31, 2025.

This is a request that the Board of Supervisors appoints the above-listed commissioners to the Juvenile Justice & Delinquency Prevention Commission.

Ameya Nori is a student at Menlo-Atherton High School. He serves as a San Mateo County Youth Commissioner and the Chair of the Restorative Justice Subcommittee. As a commissioner, he hopes to continue to advocate for community intervention programs that support youth development and divert them from the school-to-prison pipeline.

Wesley Liu is a rising junior at Pacific Bay Christian School in Pacifica. He currently volunteers with the Marin County Peer Court as a youth advocate. He also serves as a Youth Advisory Board member of the California Association of Youth Courts. Additionally, he serves as a youth leader at San Mateo County's peer court program (Peer Point). He is deeply passionate about juvenile justice. He will continue to advocate for restorative justice principles and work to prevent youth entry into the criminal justice system. He also interns for a congressional campaign. At school, he is the captain of the Speech and Debate Team among other roles. In his spare time, Wesley enjoys teaching Taekwondo at his dojo.

Sathvik Nori is a student at Stanford University and has been on the JJDPC for 3 years. He joined in after witnessing how disparate outcomes in school discipline caused youth to be put on the school-to-prison pipeline. He is very interested in education policy and hopes to work to ensure that all youth in San Mateo County have access to the tools they need to thrive. In his free time, Sathvik enjoys traveling, reading research surrounding education, and spending time with his friends.
