Recommendation for reappointments to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual Plus (LGBTQIA+) Commission, each for a term ending June 30, 2029:

 

A)                     Camille Kennedy, for a first full term; and

 

B)                     Chris Sturken, for a second full term.

BACKGROUND:                     

The LGBTQIA+ Commission reports and makes recommendations to the Board of Supervisors regarding policies, programs, procedures and legislation affecting LGBTQIA+ individuals in San Mateo County, and provides outreach and support to at-risk and underserved LGBTQIA+ populations within San Mateo County, including youth, communities of color, non-English speakers, older adults, and immigrants. The Commission promotes transgender inclusion among private and public entities in San Mateo County, including access to health care and to gendered spaces such as bathrooms and shelters. It develops initiatives to support LGBTQIA+ families with children in San Mateo County and provides a public forum for input from the LGBTQIA+ community to identify unmet needs.

 

DISCUSSION:

Camille Kennedy began serving on the commission with a partial term in 2025 and being recommended for her first full term effective July 2026 upon approval of this reappointment. Chris Sturken (he/him) was initially appointed to the commission in October 2020 to a partial term before being reappointed to a first full term effective July 2023, and is being recommended for a second full term effective July 2026 upon approval of this reappointment. Each term will be effective July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2029.

 

Camille Kennedy is Associate Vice President at the Environmental Defense Fund, where she leads strategic fundraising initiatives focused on climate and environmental justice. With over 30 years of experience in philanthropy, nonprofit leadership, and urban planning, she has held senior roles at LifeMoves, the Ms. Foundation for Women, Avenidas, and Random Acts of Flowers. Camille holds a master’s in urban planning from Harvard and serves on the Menlo Park Planning Commission and the board of the Wender Weis Foundation for Children. She lives in Menlo Park with her three children.

 

Chris Sturken is currently a Program Coordinator with Stanford University School of Medicine and has previously worked for Sacred Heart Community Service, HIP Housing, HEART and Committee for Green Foothills. He is a member of the Redwood City Council, has helped found the San Mateo County Stonewall Democratic Club, and volunteers with One San Mateo. He lives in Redwood City.
