Recommendation for the appointments to the Commission on the Status of Women:

 

A)                     Ana Avendaño, for an initial partial term ending June 30, 2026; and

 

B)                     Michelle Stewart, for an initial partial term ending June 30, 2024.

BACKGROUND:

The Commission is charged with the responsibility of assessing the needs of women, girls and families in the County. It acts as a resource and makes recommendations to the Board of Supervisors annually.

 

DISCUSSION:

Ana Avendaño is being recommended to serve on a seat carrying an existing partial term ending June 30, 2026 formerly held by Sue Datta who has resigned. Michelle Stewart is being recommended to serve an initial partial term ending June 30, 2024 on a seat formerly held by Anya Drabkin who has also resigned.

 

Ana Avendaño, EdD, is a long-time resident of Redwood City. She has had interest in joining a County Commission since her early experiences coordinating the County’s Youth Commission in 2016. Since then, she has become a mother and attained her doctorate. Currently she is the Executive Director of El Concilio and is inspired by her work with the Latina Coalition of Silicon Valley.

 

Michelle Stewart lives in East Palo Alto with her husband and three daughters. She is the Executive Director of Hope Hangar and currently a Board Member on the Ravenswood Education Foundation. She is passionate about the outcomes of women and girls in her community and is ready to apply her leadership skills to this county-wide commission.
